From Your SMC

Well, we've kicked off another year with another sucessful conclave. I am proud to be writing this letter to you as the 2005-2006 State Master Councilor. I know we are going to have a great year, and I'm looking forward to working with all of you and visiting your chapters.

This year, we are bringing back the statewide initiation. It will be held on August 27th at the Aladdin Shrine in Columbus. Registration starts at 9:15 am , with the degrees starting promptly at 10. If you are reading this and thinking to yourself, "Why should I go?" then you probably haven't heard about the great prizes we are giving away. If your chapter brings the most members, candidates, and advisors total, then Ohio DeMolay will take everyone from that chapter that is in attendance out to lunch afterwards. If you bring in five or more candidates (first-line signers), then you will receive an iPod shuffle. And, if your chapter brings at least two candidates, then everyone in attendance from your chapter will receive a t-shirt. So you can see that there are many reasons to attend the statewide initiation and get your friends to join.

Also, make sure that the 10th of September is cleared on your calendar, because that is the date of State Paintball. I can't wait to see you guys at statewide so we can work together in DeMolay. Again, I hope to see all of you in the near future, and I know that you and I can make this year a memorable one for Ohio DeMolay.

Fundraising the next frontier- From your SSC.

This month let’s look at the importance of fundraising. As with any organization, DeMolay Chapters have expenses. These expenses range from insurance, which is now $11 per member per year, to refreshments like pizza. If a chapter has 40 members they are paying $440 a year just for insurance!! Some chapters barely bring in enough to pay for insurance alone! Chapters could add another Fundraising activity to provide the extra money to implement DeMolay Activity Accounts or DAAs.

For a DAA the Chapter Dads decides upon a percentage of the profits that each member who participates will receive. If five young men participate, 10% should be plenty. If twenty guys take part, then 2.5-3% should be a healthy amount. In the end the goal is to split the profits 50-50 with the members who actually made the money. The money in a DAA can be used for anything from Paintball to Cedarpoint or even State Events like Conclave!! One option could be to set a MAX amount they can withdraw at one time ($10-$20 should be plenty) so that they don’t drain it all at once and have the opportunity to go more places. For those chapters who are struggling with insurance money, think about having a main fundraising activity that would provide the cash flow for the chapter and then have a few other fundraisers to help the guys. This system should create more enthusiasm about Fundraising activities as well as encourage the young men of your chapter to attend activities that would normally be out of their price range.

Brethren, Look here in the following months for more information on fundraising!!

It's a Membership thing! - From your SJC

DeMolay EmblemWelcome all to another term in Ohio DeMolay where our motto this term is "Got to get you into my life." To keep with this theme Ohio will be making a big push on membership this year. So what is the first step of recruiting a member? That's right, the prospect party. But don't those take a lot of time to plan, and isn't it hard to stand in front of a crowd of candidates and parents trying to explain what DeMolay is? Well not anymore. Any event can be a prospect party so long as it is well planned and fun. A game of Ultimate Frisbee in the park or a family cookout lets candidates (and their sometimes skeptical parents) see DeMolay in action. Why show a PowerPoint presentation about brotherhood when it can be witnessed firsthand? So get out there and show those soon-to-be brothers what DeMolay is all about.

Let's make a dent in the universe !

Please take time to read the “News and Views” link off the web site on a frequent basis. You'll find out details about many interesting things happening throughout Ohio.

Congratulations to Upper Sandusky Chapter – Chapter of the Year, Dad Earl C. Land Jr. – Guild of the Leather Apron (Advisor of the Year) and Joe Rehnert – DSA (DeMolay of the Year). I also want to thank our immediate Past State Master Councilor, Chris Grinstead, for his efforts to move Ohio DeMolay forward during the year. I’m glad he will still be around to help assist Ohio DeMolay as the Region IV Coordinator. In addition, several other State Officers either reached majority this year or are not returning and I want to wish Rick Umbach, Dan Shady, Jason Reichert, Alex Cunningham, and Joshua Yoakam the best in their future endeavors. I also cannot say enough for the job in which our retiring State Councilor Advisor, Dad Jeff Rannebarger, has done for Ohio DeMolay. THANK YOU!

  1. Membership! Membership! Membership! ! Someone asked you to join, share the fun with your friends!
  2. The Chapter of the Year Rules have been revised for 2005-2006. Please take time to look them over and make this the year for your Chapter to strive to obtain this goal.
  3. Each Chapter should consider submitting the monthly forms to acknowledge your activities during the year. We can only acknowledge your Chapter accomplishments when you let us know about them.
  4. Each Chapter needs to determine when they plan on holding their next Installation of Officers. Once you have determined this date (and is has been cleared by your Governor), please let the State Master Councilor know the date so that it can be publicized. Most Installations with poor attendance are not because of a lack of desire for the State Officers to attend but rather for a lack of knowledge about the date and time of the Installation.
  5. Lawrence County Chapter has now accomplished the necessary goals to receive their Charter. The Institution date is being planned for October 9th at 4 PM in Ironton, Ohio.
  6. Please support the State Activities and events. They are planned for your enjoyment and learning. Without a sufficient participation some events may be cancelled in the future. Every Chapter should start planning now to send at least on member to ODLE and next year I expect to see at lest one representative from every Chapter at Conclave.
