Happy Turkey Month!
I trust all of you had a good Halloween,
dressing in your pirate costumes or fox outfits or whatever you kids wear
these days. I hope you Trick-or-Treated some extra candy for me from that
house that leaves the candy bowl outside on the steps, expecting kids to
only take one candy bar. Those silly people!
Well anyway, thanks to all that came and
supported the Grand Lodge of Ohio at their installation. Dad Williamson
really appreciated our support.
The next state event is State Flag
Football on November 12, in Marietta. The registration fee is only $5 for
anyone who is playing! Registration starts at 10 AM, teams will be
randomly drawn, and gameplay starts at 11 AM. Will your team be the
winners? Be there and find out. I hope to see everyone there ready to
play some fast paced football!
Also, mark your calendars for the 17th
of December. This is the State Master Councilor's reception at the
Cleveland Masonic Temple. It will be followed by the Second District
Holiday's Dance. Registration for the reception is $20 Due by December
1st. Admission to the Dance only is $5
That's all for this month, I hope
everyone has a happy Thanksgiving. Think of me when you're carving that
turkey, duck, bison, or whatever it is you kids eat these days. Oh, and
save me some stuffing. And gravy. Have to have gravy.

From your SSC: Fundraising your way to the dinner table.
|
|

|
|
Though I traditionally think of November as a time
for a Membership Blitz, it is also a great time for a big time
fundraiser. One that works particularly well for the season is a Ham or
Turkey Sale. They deliver them to you, and you send your boys off to
deliver them to their customers. Collect the money and reap the benefits.
This is a very easy fundraiser to do!
All you have to do is find a supplier that you can buy the Hams or
Turkeys from, hopefully at a discounted rate. Create an order form that
you can give to every member of your chapter and ask each of them to sell
5 Hams or Turkeys. Remember to have a spot for the customers Name,
Address, Phone Number, and order on the form. Collect the forms and
simply call your supplier with the total numbers that you sold.
This is a great fundraiser for multiple
reasons. Everyone expects organizations to sell things which are of no use
to them, but by selling the main course for their Thanksgiving feast you
assure yourself that everyone will need one and ordering from you allows
them the convenience of having it delivered to them at their home.
Also, let’s think about the
numbers here. If you sell the hams and turkeys for $10 more than you pay
for them (which is very reasonable) and every one of your 10 chapter
members sell 5 total, then you would make $500 on one quick and easy
fundraiser. Plus, the public relations that you get from the personal
contact with the community is priceless.

The one two punch!
How do you keep a new
brother interested in DeMolay after he joins? It's easy, hit them on the
head! Scratch that, hit them with a fun event after their initiation.
Oftentimes, you'll have a new brother's full attention if you just show
him a good time. But attention is fickle; if you don't catch it quickly
you'll lose it. So follow up an initiation with a fun event.
But don't throw an event
together at the last minute. Plan to do something after the initiation
that will be fun and makes the new brother(s) feel part of the chapter.
Go out to eat and have the new guys sit in the middle of the table. Play
flag football and have the new brother(s) be captain(s).
If you catch a new
brother's attention right after their initiation he will have something
to tell his friends when they ask him "So what did you do last
weekend?"
And don’t forget
that the State Membership Drive is going on until Dec. 1st, so a big
initiation in Nov. could lead a brother to win anything from a DeMolay
wristband to a free trip to Winterfest, maybe even an Xbox 360!

From the Desk of the Executive officer.
|
|

|
|

Please take time to read the “News
and Views” link off the web site on a frequent basis. You'll find
out details about many interesting things happening throughout Ohio.
Our SMC, Eddie Jones, and I made several
visits to different Grand bodies to represent Ohio DeMolay during October
and we are getting details finalized for several activities including
Flag Football, SMC Reception, Winterfest, State Ritual Competition, and
State DodgeBall. However, my article will be significantly different than
normal.
Since assuming the responsibilities as
Executive Officer one of the tasks that I have been working with the
State Elected Officers on is planning and budgeting activities. I’m
going to give some suggestions that we are using on how to budget an
activity. You might want to follow the steps below:
- Determine if the event is going to be a money maker or a
break even event
- Determine how many you estimate will attend the event
- Determine if there will be a cost per person
- Determine if revenue will be generated for the activity
using another forms of fund raising (i.e. At paintball the Shoot a
State Officer event to make money)
- Determine what are the costs per person (“variable
costs”) are for the activity
- Determine how much are known costs (“sunk
cost”) for the activity (cost of facility to hold the event,
referees or facilitators, etc.)
- To get the expenses, multiply the data from step 2 by the
step 5 data and add in step 6 data. This should be your expenses for
the event.
- To get the revenue, multiply the data from step 2 by the
step 3 data and add in step 4 data. This should be your revenue for
the event
- Once you have determined the expenses and revenue, you will
then be able to determine net profit. You can then decide if you can
spend more on the event, need to increase cost per person or other
revenue sources, etc. based on whether the event is a money maker or
break even. This will also allow you to know if you will be able to
make the expected funds from the activity.
An example of this could be the State
Flag Football (the numbers are hypothetical).
- Determined, it should be a break even event.
- 50 estimated to be in attendance
- Charging $5 per person in attendance
- Charging for various food items (assume $30 total profit)
- Give-aways $2
- $100 t-shirts for the winners
- 50 * 2 = $100 + $100 = $200 expenses
- 50* 5 = $250 revenue
- $250-$200 = $50 but since this is a break even event $50 more
could be spent on the activity and you would still break even (or
you could decide to use the profit to offset another event to keep
it for being too costly)
This may seem
elementary but it is critical to making sure your Chapter (or the Ohio
State Council) is fiscally responsible.
In DeMolay Service,
Dad Shaw

Delicious Ritual!
|
|

|
|

Hello Brothers!!!
Some people (not myself), don’t
like ritual practices. I don’t know why. They all say that
it’s not any fun, and there’s no incentive to go. Well
brethren, I have conquered both of those problems at once. The
“F”’s of DeMolay are food, fun, fellowship, and
females. It is through the “F”’s that our problems have
been solved.
Try this: on the off week of your
meetings (for example, my chapter meets on the even Wednesdays, so we
hold this on the third Wednesday), hold an event where all of your
officers gather to practice ritual. Fun already, but it gets better!
After the event, have your sweetheart cook your chapter up some good old
cookies (or treat the nice lady to a luxurious dinner at your local
CiCi’s), and follow that up with some games at a brother’s
house. Not only will this keep the ritual work for your chapter fresh in
your minds for important things like initiations, but you can even have
fun while doing so. I recommend calling it “Delicious
Ritual”, because there aren’t any self-respecting DeMolays
that would pass up the opportunity for food, let alone the chance to show
off their proficiency in ritualism.
