From your SMC

snowmannI hope everyone had a spectacular turkey day. I know I did, and I am definitely not regretting a weekend off of school and a stomach full of sweet potatoes and corn.

I would first like to thank everyone who attended State Flag Football. I know everyone had a good time, win or lose, and I was glad to see everyone's smiling faces and sweaty foreheads. Thanks also to Dad Lowe, the coordinator, and all the referees who helped make the event a success.

Coming up in December, on Saturday the 17th, is the State Officers' Reception followed by the holiday's Dance. The reservation deadline has passed but you may still attend the dance at a cost of 5$ at the door. You do not need reservations if you are only attending the dance. I hope to see everyone out there on the 17th because this is always a great event.

Winterfest is January 6-8 at the Gemini Complex in wonderful Toledo, Ohio. It's going to be a blast! Ladies are invited for the weekend, and are definitely invited to the dance on Saturday the 7th. Registration forms are due on the 8th of December to your district governor. Then, mark your calendars for the 4th of February, as we have an exciting "to be announced" state event on that day.

That's all I have for this month, I hope everyone has safe holidays. Also, to everyone that celebrates Christmas, I know that there are a few deserving coal this year (me being one of them), but I hope your stockings are stuffed to the brim with holiday joy and merriness.

Just don't led Rudolph drink too much egg nog.

In DeMolay Service,

Edward A. Jones

2005-2006 State Master Councilor

From your SSC-Tis the time for giving.

Snow sceneWhen many of us think about Christmas we think of gifts, dead pine trees, and lots of tinsel. For this month I would like to encourage you to think of the gift of giving.

Give back to your communities in anyway you can. My suggestion is that you do some kind of fundraiser for a charity of your choice. Some great charities to donate to are The Make a Wish Foundation, Special Olympics, Shriner’s Hospital, etc. Any charity will work because especially around Christmas we like to think about how we can help the children and all of these charities.

For this I would recommend one of two Fundraisers. Christmas Caroling for donations and Snow Shoveling. If your chapter is particularly blessed in the vocal section then you may want to consider caroling for your community. This is a great way to get your chapter known as well as encourage Christmas spirit and help a charity in the process.

Simply make up a sign that is easy to read and very concisely explains who you are and what you are doing. Then just go out into the community and go door to door in the “elderly” part of town. Knock, put a Top Hat or basket down to collect any donation, and start singing some standard Christmas Carols. Afterwards be sure to send the money in to the charity of your choice.

Snow Shoveling is a very basic concept. Simply get some guys together with snow shovels and head to the “elderly” part of town to shovel some driveways. You may opt to do this as a service for your community but if you do look for donations, asking for $5 in small towns or $10-15 in cities would not be out of line. Make sure you are cheerful and tell them a little about DeMolay and what you stand for.

Remember that this is Christmas time and courtesy and compassion should seem to radiate from your smiles.

Good Luck and Merry Christmas!!!

From your SJC- Beat the winter Blues

monkey christmasWinter Prospect parties!

Here are some ideas for some warming prospect parties this winter.

  • Have a Holiday party in a warm family atmosphere like at a member’s house. Have hot chocolate and put an emphasis on brotherhood during the holidays.
  • Go sledding. Invite brothers and prospects to a local park with a steep hill and bring your sleds. This can also be paired with the holiday party idea.
  • Do something strange. A good way to get prospects is to do something in the winter that isn’t normally done by most guys. Try winter basketball. Shovel and salt an outdoor basketball court and shoot some hoops, or go winter camping.
  • Be safe! Don’t have an outdoor event without the proper precautions. Be sure to have some place to warm up when needed.

Have fun and keep your DeMolay spirit warm all winter!

From the desk of the Executive Officer

ISC

I want start by wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season. Please support the State events as the State Officers spend a great deal of time planning these activities for your enjoyment.

During the next year, I would like for every DeMolay and Advisor to make a commitment to work to help improve and strengthen the Order of DeMolay. This past year our new member numbers were down but I'm confident that the individual Chapters are putting forth effort to turn this around.

I continue to hear about more prospect parties being held and creative ideas being put in place to help gain new members. I have no doubt that once a young man attends a DeMolay event that he will be interested in joining, we just have to get the potential new member to an activity.

In addition, we have had around ten unsolicited requests for information to potentially join DeMolay in the past couple of months from young men seeing our web site and becoming interested in more information about DeMolay.

If you have suggestions for improvement, make sure you get them to Eddie Jones, our State Master Councilor, and maybe he might decide to add your idea as a new program for Ohio DeMolay.

When and where was a dance with the largest attendance in DeMolay history held?

Hint: A popular Vacuum brand name ran the nation, and Wayne and Garth get distracted there before a rock and roll concert. Werner Karl Heisenberg won a Nobel prize for his work on quantum mechanics the same year.

Good Luck!

Chapter Activity Idea!

pug christmasHere’s a fun thing that you can do with your chapter for the winter months. Get your chapter together and have Christmas DeMolay Style! Here’s how it works:

Host a pot-luck dinner. Everyone will bring in a hot and cold dish to share and a present in an unmarked wrapping. They shouldn’t tell anyone else what they brought and the catch is that the present shouldn't cost more than 2 dollars. This price limitation makes it harder for members to get good gifts.

The members should then be counted and a slip of paper should be made for each gift. Then, number the gifts and put the number slips into a hat, and have each of the members then take turns drawling a slip. After everyone has a number the first person picks a gift, he opens it, and shows everyone.

The next member picks a gift and if they choose, can exchange their gift with a different member’s gift. This continues until everyone has a gift and the last person gets to pick from all the other gifts previously opened. This activity is fun and inexpensive.

Enjoy this fun event from the desk of Jacob Wrightsman, State Marshall

Congratulations Blue team, State Flag Football Champs!

Membership Marvin!

Hello Ohio DeMolay

Now we are all aware of the slow down in membership and that someone needs to start the membership train, which we all want to ride. Fortunately, Medina Chapter and I have found the coal to fuel Ohio DeMolay's membership train.

After showing the School Board of Medina City Schools that DeMolay was a positive youth organization, we were given the names and addresses of the young men between the age of 12 and 17 who attend Medina City Schools. By adding to and taking from the letter from the 4 by 4 membership plan, we drafted a letter which the chapter voted on and approved. After one meeting all the members went downstairs and stuffed and folded 1200 envelopes. At the bottom of each letter were two dates for informational nights as well as a telephone number to RSVP

On the night of the first informational meeting we were expecting about five young men to show up. Surprisingly, seven did arrive. After a brief introduction, the boys were taken down the street to the local lazer tag for some fun. Meanwhile, the Dad Advisor and the Master Councilor gave a presentation of what DeMolay is to the parents and answered any questions that they might have had. When the young men returned, the DeMolays answered all of their questions. The evening concluded with some refreshments and the signing of six petitions.

The next informational night is scheduled for December 2nd and nineteen guys have already called in their RSVP. I recommend this approach to any and all chapters whether you are in need of members of not. With this one membership drive, Medina Chapter will most likely double or even triple in size. It takes a little bit of work, but the payoff is awesome!

Brother Alex Marshall,

State 2nd District Representative, Master Councilor of Medina Chapter

"DeMolay One Liners"

In a word-what is DeMolay all about? No one-liner can tell the whole story, but some of the following examples come succinctly close.

  1. DeMolay is a communion among brothers.
  2. DeMolay is- concern for the world in which we live, and a desire to better it.
  3. DeMolay is a song to which the words have not grown old.
