Thanks to all those who helped out at and attended
our State Devotional Day. The residents really appreciated it, as many of
them told me after the service. A special thanks to Fairborn Assembly for
making the trip and trying to beat us in volleyball.
The second-to-last 2005-2006 State
Council event is State Marksmanship Day. This event will be held at the
Cincinnati Masonic Temple and will start at 9:00 am.
If you are traveling from afar and need
to stay the night, contact myself or the Executive Officer for places to
stay overnight. This event will run until 11:30, after which we will be
attending Paramount's Kings Island .
Instructions about Kings Island will be
given out at Marksmanship Day, or, if you cannot attend Marksmanship Day,
you can give me a call.
Keep up the good work, keep initiating
new brothers, and keep supporting Ohio DeMolay - remember, it's YOUR
organization.

Edward A. Jones

What are you
waiting for? Click on the picture above for Ohio DeMolay Conclave 2006
forms!
This month, let’s take a look at
Fundraising for Conclave.
One resource offered to you by Ohio
DeMolay is Ad Sales. For this it is really quite simple. Use the forms
offered on the Ohio DeMolay website and simply fill them out. This year
we are offering a special deal just for our members. If you sell $500 in
ads then you will go to Conclave for free!
Let’s break that down a little
bit. That means that if you sell 5 full page ads, you go to Conclave for
Free. Sell 7 Half Page Ads, 13 Quarter Page Ads, or 20 Eighth Page Ads
and get the same deal.
Who would buy one of these? Well talk to
your local Lodge, Shrine, Commandry, Eastern Star Chapters, Ameranth, or
even our sister organizations, Rainbow or Job's Daughters. These things
practically sell themselves, especially if someone from your area is
running for an Elected Office. Simply inform your Lodge (etc.) that John
Doe is running for State Senior Councilor, Scribe, or State Master
Councilor and ask them to place an ad in support of there candidate. So
let’s say that you sell four full page ads, one quarter page ad,
and one eighth page ad. That puts you at $465 Is that enough to let you
go to Conclave for Free? No, unfortunately we cannot make any exceptions
but an easy way to top that off is to either try and sell more ads or use
the Patron list.
The Patron list is a section of the
Conclave Program that lists everyone that donates $1 to DeMolay. Take
your list to your local lodge meeting and ask the members to help you
reach your goal.
If they don’t get you quite there
do not be discouraged. Just go to one of the other organizations and ask
them to do the same thing.
Good Luck!

Here’s an idea that
incorporates Masonic Service, fundraising and membership all into one
easy-to-plan event.
Many chapters have hosted
pasta dinners, pancake breakfasts and the like before as fundraisers. The
majority of your Chapter’s customers have probably been Masons from
your sponsoring body and surrounding Lodges.
The next time you have
one of these fundraisers, have one or two DeMolays talk to the customers
about DeMolay. Masons are a great source of members. Their sons or
grandsons already have a background in Masonry and their
fathers/grandfathers should be more than willing to help out the chapter
later on down the road.
To take the fundraiser
further, use the money raised at the serving to pay for the candidates to
join.
Using this plan will not
only bring in members but it will bring in quality members, future
leaders of your home Chapter.

Please take time to read the “News
and Views” link off the web site on a frequent basis. You'll find
out details about many interesting things happening throughout Ohio.
Usually my articles are fairly upbeat
and restricted to DeMolay items but this month I felt I would like to
share a couple of personal items.
This has been a fairly difficult and
busy month for me personally. At the start of the month, I was told that
after 21 years at work, I had 3 weeks to find a new job at work (inside
the company) or adios. Luckily, I found two to choose from (both in
Dayton) and will be starting the new job on June 7th. I’ll probably
soon after that time have a new work phone number and will be getting it
to the appropriate persons.
Also this month my father-in-law also
became very sick and had to be taken in for open heart surgery.
Unfortunately was not able to recover from the surgery and passed away
shortly after the surgery.
I would like to thank George Tilden for
stepping up this passed month to help assist me with some extra duties
surrounding Conclave and the District Governors for their support this
past month.
While this month’s message was
fairly serious, I want to make sure I end by reminding everyone that
Conclave is just around the corner and there are lots of FUN!!!!!!!!!!!
surprises planned.
I hope to see you at Conclave.

Dad Shaw

DeMolay Quick Trivia
|
|

|
|
Last Month's Question: Which DeMolay Hall of Famer
wrote some very popular novels often read during High School English
class.
Hint: No grapes for you.
Answer: John Steinbeck
A quote from the DeMolay Cordon in March
1969 says it all. "Although Dad Steinbeck was an unwilling celebrity
who zealously guarded his privacy, modestly took little part in the
public literary life of his time, and rarely served on committees, he
retained interest in and regard for the Order of DeMolay. At the time of
his death, he was serving on the Executive Advisory Committee of our 50th
Anniversary."
Steinbeck was a charter member of
Watsonville Chapter in Watsonville, California, in 1921. He was inducted
into the DeMolay Hall of Fame on June 16, 1995.
In 1939, The Grapes of Wrath won the
Pulitzer Prize.
Steinbeck's thirty-three major works
included seventeen novels (three adapted for stage and thirteen made into
films), three original screen plays, and four books of short stories. His
most notable works include: Tortilla Flat, 1935; Of Mice and Men, 1937;
The Red Pony, 1937; The Grapes of Wrath, 1939; Sea of Cortez, 1941; The
Moon is Down, 1942; Cannery Row, 1945; The Wayward Bus, 1947; East of
Eden, 1952; The Winter of Our Discontent, 1961; and Travels with Charley
in Search of America, 1962. Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for
Literature in 1962 "... for his realistic as well as imaginative
writings, distinguished by a sympathetic humor and a keen social
perception."
Congratulations to:
Robert Laing of Van Wert Chapter, and
Keith and Will Smith of Upper Sandusky Chapter.
Here's your new
question!:Which DeMolay
chapter holds the title of being the oldest continually active DeMolay
Chapter in the world?
Hint:I'm the largest city in my state as
well as the birthplace of a president who served while the Ford Pinto was
in production.
Good Luck!
The First 3 DeMolays to
Email me with the correct answer will win a prize!
Do you know what the answer is?

District update- From Price Murphy

Greetings Brethren and Friends of Ohio
DeMolay!
The First District has been on a roll
during April and May! Recent events included a big pancake breakfast.
Northern Light Lodge #40 in Maumee, Ohio sponsors a huge pancake
breakfast every year to raise money for The Kidney Foundation of
Northwest Ohio. 5$ for all you can eat pancakes was quite a deal. The
First District volunteered at the breakfast by bussing tables and doing
whatever else was asked of them. In just 7 hours, the event raised over
5,000$ for the Kidney Foundation.
April 22 was State Tri-Youth Dodge Ball
Day at Rossford High School, just on the outskirts of Toledo. DeMolay and
Rainbows came from all over Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin to create 6-man
teams and enjoy pummeling each other with dodge balls. 10$ was the
entrance fee, but it was free to be a spectator. The day began with
"open play" as folks were still arriving from various parts of
the country. Then, a double-elimination style tournament began and fun
was had by all.
The winning team consisted of SMC Eddy
Jones, 2nd District Rep. Alex Marshall, State Chaplain Matthew Klepacz,
Michigan's SMC Justin Rizzo, SJC Eric Small, and Rainbow/Job's Daughter
Amber Stands. The Tri-Youth event was extremely successful and many
requested that the event be held next year.
Also, membership is through the roof! We
have been so successful in fact, that Van Wert Chapter in Van Wert and
Black Swamp Chapter in North Baltimore have both applied for Charters to
become chapters. Ottawa Chapter in Genoa, Ohio has begun meeting
regularly again after being inactive for a few years.
The First District is blossoming with
more and more new members every month.
Price's food for thought:
Will you be traveling somewhere in the
near future for vacation, school, or sports? If you can answer yes, then
why not Visit a local DeMolay chapter? There are currently 6 active
chapters in the First District that would extremely enjoy any and all
visitors.
That's all for now.
