Brethren of Ohio DeMolay,

This past month has been a busy one! It started off with a bang as the State Officers went off to Upper Sandusky for the State Officer Retreat. I can proudly say that the State Officers have been properly trained and are ready to assist YOU in whatever you need. ASK and you shall receive. The next weekend I took a trip up to Michigan DeMolay’s Summerfest (there version of Conclave) and would like to thank the brethren of Michigan for making me feel so welcome. I got the chance to visit Upper Sandusky Chapter for yet another wonderful Installation. But my real treat for the weekend came in North Baltimore, OH. Where Black Swamp Chapter had there FIRST EVER Installation! Brother JT Sharninghouse went in as Master Councilor in what was the culmination of years of hard work. We are all proud of the work that he has put in and will look for many good things to come out of Black Swamp. On the 21st I attended one of the most fun events of the month! Linden Chapter held their Annual Kickball Tournament where the DeMolays take on the Advisors and prospects. I am proud to say that the DeMolays beet the Old Men and kept our dignity. Ralph H. McMillan Chapter held there Installation on the 23rd and Brother Andrew Puterbaugh went in as Master Councilor. Andrew is already serving the State as the 3rd Preceptor. I hope that all of you, especially the 12 new DeMolays, enjoyed the Statewide Initiation. The members of the 4th (and 2nd) District did a wonderful job exemplifying the DeMolay Degree and I thank them for there hard work and dedication. State Paintball can be summarized in a few short words: Fun, Food, Fellowship, and Females. That’s right Brethren, the 4 F’s were present shouting the joys of DeMolay. I hope that everyone is proud of there battle scars and had a good time. I had the pleasure of celebrating my 7th Anniversary of my Membership in DeMolay. On August 28th, 1999 I joined DeMolay at a Statewide Initiation with more than twenty other Young Men. I had no idea that I would be standing here today only seven short years later. If you are wondering how you become State Master Councilor then listen up; Love DeMolay with all your heart and live the virtues it teaches. If you truly Love DeMolay then good things will happen! Good luck for this next month. God Bless Mother, God Bless Father, God Bless the Purposes of DeMolay!

Fraternally,

Bro. Craig A. Loose
State Master Councilor

123 spin1-2-3 Spin

Everyone and there brother always seem to have the best way to bring members into the chapter. There’s 4X4, digging for members, prospect parties, and many others. This is great. However, we never see a membership retention plan. How good is initiation 20 new guys if only two or three intend to stick around?? To solve this problem, we came up with such a plan, and we call it 1-2-3-SPIN!!! Each number represents a requirement.

·  1 represents the initiation. Simple enough.

·  2 represents the two stated meetings the new brother must come to. He cant be active he doesn't know what’s going on.

·  And 3 is the 3 activities he must attend. WE got to keep him coming to fun stuff, too.
Now for SPIN. All you need is a large bucket or covered container, we recommend a huge, empty tub of cheesy poofs or pretzels from Sam’s Club, a couple of sheets of paper, a budget, and a dream! Take the sheets of paper and cut them down to little squares and write prizes on them. The prizes can be anything; free video game, free movie, free dinner, pizza, gift cards, etc. You name it, it could be a prize. Its best to set out a budget before hand. Put the pieces of paper into the tub and SPIN. Once all the requirements have been met, at the next meeting, bring out the tub and spin it. Whatever the brother picks he gets.

A great way to motivate members to bring new guys in is to let them get in on the game, as well. If they go to everything their candidate goes to, why shouldn't they get a prize?? If not for them, the new guy wouldn't be there. This plan works. If you have any question, just let Bro. Dave Hartsock know, he’ll be glad to help!

Invest in CDs

Here’s an idea for your chapter’s next installation. Many chapters utilize music in their installation ceremonies for chapter officers entering the room, taking their stations and so on. Why not burn this onto a CD and sell at the reception after the installation. Include on the disk a copy of the chapter’s term plan, a chapter roster and so forth to make it a valuable tool. Why stop there? Try making up a wall calendar with your chapter’s term plan on it and selling it as well. When you have a good idea run with it. Try including local Rainbow assemblies and Job bethals to make a local tri-youth term plan ready to hang on the buyers wall. This calendar will not only bring in money, it will also help friends and members of your chapter stay on top of Masonic Youth events going on in the area. For more info on making a calendar try these places staples, office max, kinkos ect.

ISCPlease take time to read the “News and Views” link off the web site on a frequent basis. You'll find out details about many interesting things happening throughout Ohio.

1. Black Swamp Chapter located at North Baltimore is officially operating. On August 20th, they held their first ever Installation of officers. Unfortunately, I could not make it (though I was on my way) as my van decided it was tired and stopped in the semi lane of the Pilot gas station at I-71 and SR36. Hopefully, it will be back on the road again soon.
2. The State Officers met as a group on the weekend of August 5th and planned out the specific details for all the events for the rest of the year. In addition, they assigned a State Officer to chair each event and will try to have information out on each event at least 6 weeks prior to the event.
3. Each Chapter needs to take a close look at the activities that they are holding. Are there enough activities to keep you active at the Chapter? Are they varied enough to keep different interested satisfied? Would your friend enjoy doing the activities that your Chapter is providing?

These are all questions that need to be answered at the individual Chapters since it does little good to get new members if you don’t have activities to keep them active. I say a good rule of thumb is: to have enough activities of varying interests that you will want to invite your friends to join so you get a chance to see them once in a while and so that they won’t be missing out on the fun you are having in DeMolay!

One of the activities that my chapter really liked was when we had a police officer come and talk to use. Actually he was a member of the S.W.A.T. team he had brought some of his weapons that they use and he showed them to the chapter. The reason why I think that this might be a good activity for chapters is because you get to see and touch some of the weapons that they bring. When he came for the Medina meeting he brought some guns, pepper spray, Taser gun, Billy club ext. But this is good because they talk to you about a lot of things that happen to them every day. They also tell you a lot about gun safety which a lot of people now a days really don’t know how to use them the right way and what to do if you ever come across a police officer in your home or a friends home.

Getting new membership is as easy 1-2-3.

1. Holla at your prospect

·  Your friends aren't going to know about DeMolay until you plant the seed

·  tell your friends stories about your experiences in DeMolay ( No text book answers, give him a story that he can relate to)
2. Hook them up

·  Give him an application

·  Don't take no for an answer but most of all don't be pushy
3. Bring um all down

·  Initiation

·  New Member Orientation

·  Give him something to be involved in
Those are the basic principles, which have been carried on through the generations.
