Conclave 2002
Well, another Concave has ended and a new Ohio State DeMolay Council was the result.
Congratulations to Bro Joe French who was installed as the new State Master
Councilor for the Jurisdiction of Ohio as well as his corps of officers. Special wishes
go out to Bro Pete Scott who installed as the State Marshal and to
Bro Matt Vitartas who was installed as the State Senior Deacon. Congrats
to you both.
The Legion of Honor Investiture was conferred on Saturday morning in the new Athletic
Complex at Capital University where Conclave was held. We were the first group ever
outside of the University to use this facility. Dad Ian McBride was one of the
candidates to receive this award as well as RW Bro Ron Winnett, Junior Grand Deacon
of the Grand Lodge of Ohio. Both recipients were active DeMolay’s. Dad McBride was from
James E McBride Chapter and Dad Winnett was from Aladdin Chapter. Dad McBride received
his regalia from his wife Bannon. Special congrats go out to Bannon and Ian for their son
who is due in about 2 weeks.
Congratulations go out to Bro John Clark IV who swept through and proved how good
ritual can be. He was the recipient of many awards in ritual as well as some other fun
activities. Bro Pete Scott joins him for his wonderful performance in the pool
tournament. Keep it up you two.
Congratulations to Dad John "Muu" Bartley who was nominated and elected to serve as
Grand Commander for the State Court of Chevaliers. Dad Ian McBride was elected to
serve as Grand Commander in the West. The State Court of Chevaliers has made it their
duty to serve as Judges for Conclave and State Ritual Competition every year. So look
out, here we come.
I hope every one had a good time and I look forward to seeing everyone at Statewide
Initiation being held at the Shrine Temple on the 24th of August.

Funnel Cakes
Bro John J Clark IV
It was once said that behind every great undertaking, the is to be found the hard work of
a woman. This defiantly proved true during last weeks annual Groveport 4th of July
Celebration, with the Groveport Demolay funnel cakes sales. As with many years past,
the local Demolay chapter from Groveport set up their booth early Thursday morning, and
prepared for a long weekend of hard work, and good company. The funnel cake sales have
always been profitable for the chapter, and this year was of no except, mainly due to the
extraordinary efforts of the Groveport Chapter Sweetheart, Katy Knotts. Katy arrived
at the site early on Thursday morning, around 6 A.M., with a pleasant smile, and a mind to
work. Even though the temperature rose to an excess of 90, Katy and the Demolay's worked
tirelessly all day, as well as took part in the parade through Groveport.
Over the last few years the funnel cakes have been made by four advisors, standing over
four large vats of boiling oil. Not very fun. This form of production posed many safety
issues, and was not very efficient. As a solution, the chapter purchased one new, more
technologically advanced funnel cake machine. The results from this change in strategy
were astounding. Using half of the needed mix, half of the advisors need to man the
machines, and being much more environmentally friendly, the new funnel cake machine
has proved to be a very smart buy for the chapter. The success of the new machine and
the hard work of the Chapter Sweetheart weren't the only factors that made the funnel
cake sales such a great success. Many DeMolay's attended the event and devoted many
hours to the booth, and special recognition goes out to Brother Timmy Dean.
Timmy worked so continually and diligently that he was forced to take breaks.
Appreciation also goes out to Brother Tom Burnett for his efforts in planning
the event, Katy Knotts and Carly Myers for their hard work, and the Dads
for their continued tolerance to all of us.
The Sweetheart Scoop
Hello to the brothers of Groveport Chapter and Ohio. I’m Katy and I’m the Groveport
chapter Sweetheart. I have been their sweetheart since August of 2001 and I’ve
enjoyed every minute of it.
This summer has been great though! I’ve helped out a lot with the funnel cake booth and
hung out with the guys a bunch. With this article I’d like to kind of relate what goes
on from my point of view. I’ll try to write every month if I have time.
On the 4th of July, I worked with the DeMolay from Groveport for almost 18 hours.
We made a killing and I lost my voice from selling glow necklaces. The fireworks
were awesome and the rides were pretty cool and I think that everybody had a good
time. It was so hot but nobody got hurt from it. We are smelled pretty bad and I’m
sure we all just looked wonderful, but we all had a good time, and
that’s what counts.
After the 4th, we had a day of rest and then jumped right back into it
at the Car show! We had a bit of competition from a booth down the way
but they had no chance after our funnel cake eating contest! A little
girl practically buried herself in funnel cake and a man stuffed his
face to win it! We had another one later in the day but it wasn’t as
funny, except that the second place older man looked like a monkey when
he was done. We didn’t earn quite as much I don’t think, but it was
still a blast!
July 13th was a prospect party. We went and saw “Reign of Fire” at
Easton and went to Scott’s house for a cook-out. The movie was great
and there were a ton of prospects there! My brother included. We ate,
played dodge ball and basketball and all the guys ganged up on me with
waterguns!! I don’t think I had a dry anything on me, but it was fun.
All in all this month has been pretty awesome. I can’t wait to see what
comes next. So, for now, I’ll leave it at that.
look for the second issue of “The Sweetheart’s Scoop” next month.
Respectfully Submitted,
Katy Knotts, Groveport Chapter Sweetheart
Installation of Officers
Josh LaPenta was installed as Master Councilor of Groveport Chapter on Saturday, June 29, 2002
at the Groveport Masonic Temple. Installing Officer, State Marshal Murad Shorrab, presided over
the event. The calendar for this term will be published to the DeMolay Inquisitor later.
Also honored at the installation was Dad Ted Eiselben, who received the Chevalier
degree from Grand Commander Dad Jeff Rannebarger. The Chevalier award is the highest honor for
distinguised DeMolay service within the gift of DeMolay International. Only one other honor,
the Legion of Honor for outstanding leadership and service to humanity outranks this degree.
PMC Seth Foley made a beautiful presentation of the Ohio DeMolay Tribute to Motherhood. This
presentation, first made my an Ohio Master Councilor on the occasion of his installation, is
often given around the state at installations.
In lighter presentations, Bro Pete Scott was awarded the lifetime achievement award as TWIT.
The Twit of the Term award is presented at each installation by Dad Close, who was unable to
attend this installation. Dad Hess filled in to make this presentation.
Dad Hess was presented the DeMolay Medal of Appreciation by Dad Cohen. Matt Glass was named
officer of the term by outgoing MC, John Clark. Numerous merit bars were also presented.
After the installation, a reception was held downstairs, hosted by MC LaPenta's family. PMC
Michael Cogley spun tunes (can you still say "spun tunes" when he's using a computer?)
for all to listen to.
